Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about EditPhotosForFree. Can't find the answer you're looking for? Drop us a line.

Is EditPhotosForFree really free?

Yes. Every tool on EditPhotosForFree is completely free with no hidden costs, no signup, and no watermark. We sustain the project through unobtrusive display ads — your images are never sold or shared.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. All editing, conversion, and compression happens locally in your browser using Canvas, WebAssembly, and WebGPU. Your photos never leave your device, which makes us ideal for sensitive images like ID cards or private photos. You can verify this by opening your browser DevTools and inspecting the Network tab during an editing session.

Do I need to install any software?

No installation is required. EditPhotosForFree runs in any modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) on desktop, tablet, or mobile. Just visit the page and start editing.

Can I use the edited photos commercially?

Yes. You retain full rights to any image you edit on EditPhotosForFree. The output is yours to use personally or commercially with no attribution required. This includes use in product listings, marketing materials, social media, print products, and any other commercial application.

What image formats are supported?

We support JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP, TIFF, and HEIC as inputs, and can export to JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, and SVG. Each tool lists its specific supported formats in its settings panel.

Is there a file size limit?

Most tools handle files up to 50MB per image. Because all processing is local, the practical limit depends on your device's RAM — modern laptops comfortably handle 100MP images. For very large batches, we recommend processing in groups of 20-30 images at a time.

Can QR codes generated here be used commercially?

Yes. QR codes generated with our tool follow the open QR code specification (ISO/IEC 18004) and produce standard, universally scannable codes. Use them for marketing, packaging, business cards, menus, signage, or anything else — no attribution required.

Do you offer a premium or paid tier?

No. Every tool, every feature, and every export on EditPhotosForFree is completely free. There are no premium tiers, paid upgrades, paywalled features, or hidden costs. We plan to keep it this way and will announce any changes at least one year in advance.

How do you sustain the site if everything is free?

We display privacy-respecting advertisements from EthicalAds and Carbon Ads. These ads do not use cross-site tracking cookies and do not collect personal data. Ad revenue covers hosting, CDN costs, and domain registration. Your images are never sold, shared, or used for advertising purposes.

Do you store my edited images?

No. Your images are loaded into your browser memory, processed locally, and offered as a download. We have no servers that receive or store your images. Once you close the browser tab, all data is cleared. If you do not download your result before closing, it is permanently lost.

Can I edit on my phone or tablet?

Yes. The site is fully responsive and works on modern mobile browsers. Some advanced tools (like the Background Remover with WebGPU) require desktop browsers for full performance, but all basic editing tools work on mobile. Touch input is supported for drag-and-drop, pinch-to-zoom, and swipe gestures.

Do you use cookies?

We use minimal cookies. We store your theme preference (light/dark) in localStorage, which stays on your device. We use Google Analytics with anonymized, first-party cookies for basic traffic analysis. We do not use advertising cookies, cross-site tracking cookies, or social media pixels. See our Cookie Policy for details.

Is my data GDPR compliant?

Yes. Because all image processing happens in your browser, we do not collect, store, or process any personal image data on our servers. Our analytics are configured to anonymize IP addresses. We do not use cookie consent banners because we do not serve tracking cookies that would require consent under GDPR. For full details, see our Privacy Policy.

What is the maximum image resolution I can process?

There is no hard cap on resolution. Most tools will process images up to 100 megapixels on devices with sufficient RAM. Very large images (100MP+) may cause performance degradation on lower-end devices. If you experience slowdowns, try reducing the image size before editing.

Can I process images offline?

Yes, with some caveats. Once a tool page has fully loaded (including any AI model assets), it will continue to work offline because all processing is client-side. The first load requires an internet connection. We use Service Workers to cache tool assets for repeated offline use.

How does the Background Remover AI work?

The Background Remover uses a neural network called BiRefNet-Lite that runs on your GPU via WebGPU (or falls back to WebAssembly). The model is trained to identify foreground subjects by analyzing edges, colors, textures, and spatial context. It loads from CDN into your browser memory and runs entirely on your device — no image data is sent to any server.

Do QR codes expire?

No. QR codes generated with our tool are static — the data is encoded directly in the code pattern itself. The code will remain scannable indefinitely as long as the destination URL or content remains accessible. If you encode a URL that later goes offline, the QR code will still scan but the destination will be unavailable.

Can I add a logo to my QR code?

Yes. QR Code Studio supports logo embedding with PNG, JPG, or SVG files up to 2MB. When a logo is added, the error correction is automatically set to High (30% recovery) so the code remains scannable. Safe Mode verifies the logo does not exceed the safe size threshold for reliable scanning.

How many photos can I include in a collage?

The Photo Collage Maker supports from 1 to 12 photos per collage, depending on the template. You can choose from 50+ templates across 7 categories — grid, classic, creative, mosaic, circles, shapes, and mixed. Each cell supports independent filter, brightness, and contrast controls.

Can I batch-process multiple images?

Yes. The Image Editor supports batch processing of unlimited images simultaneously. You can apply global edits (crop, resize, watermark, adjustments) to all images at once, with per-image overrides for individual fine-tuning. Export as individual files or a single ZIP archive.

What types of QR codes can I create?

QR Code Studio supports 30+ content types across 8 categories: Basic (URL, Plain Text, Email, SMS, Phone), Contact (vCard, MeCard), Network (WiFi), Location (Geo), Event (Calendar), Media (YouTube, Spotify), Commerce (PayPal, SEPA, ACH, Crypto), and Social (Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, Telegram, X/Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Discord, Snapchat, Pinterest, Reddit, and more).

What is the difference between PNG and SVG export?

PNG is a raster format (pixels), best for digital use — websites, social media, email. SVG is a vector format (mathematical paths), which scales infinitely without quality loss — ideal for print, merchandise, and business cards. QR Code Studio supports both.

Can I undo changes in the editors?

Yes. All our tools support undo/redo. The Image Editor maintains per-image history, the Background Remover tracks every brush stroke, the Image Distorter has 25-state undo history, and the Pattern Generator supports full undo/redo. Use Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on Mac) or the undo button in the toolbar.

Do you support WebP and AVIF export?

Yes. The Image Editor and Image Compressor both support WebP and AVIF export. AVIF offers approximately 50% better compression than JPEG at equivalent quality. WebP is supported in 98% of browsers; AVIF in 96%. JPG and PNG are provided as fallback formats.
